This has implications for all cold-water stream ecosystems as warming temperatures could cause brook trout to be pushed out of their habitats, lead to the consumption of different macroinvertebrates, increased algal growth, and shifts in emerging insect communities.
Protecting brook trout and their habitats is important to maintain the ecological integrity of streams and rivers and to ensure the sustainability of recreational and cultural activities that rely on these fish.
Loss of biodiversity can lead to reduced food security, increased prevalence of pests and diseases, and reduced resilience to environmental shocks such as climate change. Another important strategy for protecting brook trout populations is to manage fisheries more sustainably. This can be done by implementing catch-and-release regulations, using gear that minimizes harm to fish, and restricting fishing during the spawning season to ensure that fish populations have a chance to reproduce.
